Preview: Hibike! Euphonium

Hibike! EuphoniumKyoto Animation joins the Spring season with Hibike! Euphonium.

Kumiko Oumae wants to join the Brass Club along wither her two classmates Hazuki and Sapphire, but for some reason Kumiko hesitates after seeing her classmate Reina, who’s also in ‘da club’. This club doesn’t look like your average Brass Club for sure.

The preview doesn’t reveal much, apart from highly energetic jazzy music, the cast and epilepsy provoking imagery. I wonder how much emphasis will be on the music within the show, since the focus in the trailer lies heavily on the instruments. If so, their obivoulsy be a heavy focus on jazz music, which will favor those who enjoy this musical style. Animation wise the show looks very KyoAni-esque and there are no surprises there.

The show is directed by Ishihara Tatsuya(Air, Clannad, Kanon) which may indicate a heavy underlying emotional theme. My first concern with the plot and the combination of the director, is that the show may enforce sad emotions upon its audience, making it feel unnatural and not credible. Second, it is yet to be seen or the emotional background isn’t as cliché as we’ve seen many times over. Will Kumiko be remembered about one of her dead parents? Or is it as puny a problem as in Sora no Method which seems so ridiculous it made the show a total mess?

It remains to be seen. All in all I’m still pretty confident Kyoto Animation can pull of a convincing show that at least gets a 7/10 rating. They follow a steady formula that works and generates enough revenue to make it profitable.

If nothing else, I am looking forward to Kyoto Ani making some beautiful concert scenes. The choreography and overall technical skill in their animation is phenomenal. Easily the best studio at syncing the song with the characters singing, and playing instruments.
