Preview: Hitsugi no Chaika

hitsugi1The spring season is coming closer and Bones entry is Hitsugi no Chaika. Can this action adventure series be the season highlight?

Hitsugi no Suki revolves around a 20-year-old veteran soldier Toru Acura who meets a 14-year-old sorceress named Chaika. Chaika carries a coffin with her and Toru decides to follow Chaika on her quest so he may once find meaning in life.

The first element that springs to mind is the fact that Chaika is 14-year-old girl, wondering why she couldn’t be an adult, but oh well stuff needs to sell. Chaika is voiced by Anzai Chika, who has done mainly supporting roles and this will perhaps be an interesting journey for her.

Acura is voiced by Majima Junji who voiced Tohru in one of my favorite series, Hanasaku Iroha. Another significant role was Ryuuji in Toradora, a very strong romance series. This voice actor did some pretty amazing roles in the past and I guess he won’t disappoint in this adaptation either.

Hitsugi no Chaika is produced by Bones. A studio known for its good animation quality and developed stories. Bones produced series such as Zetsuen no Tempest, Gosick and Soul Eater. Admittedly I found Gosick one of the more colorful adaptations, while many other series had a more grayish color scheme. Nonetheless, the series I’ve seen didn’t have major drawbacks and were consistent overall.

There is a manga adaptation which is published in magazine Shonen Ace. This strongly indicates a shounen genre orientated series and explains why Chaika is a 14-year-old girl, making the show more appealing to a younger audience.

Fans of the shounen genre will highly likely appreciate this series and with Bones at the wheel, chances are high this series will be worth a spot on your ‘plan to watch’ list.
