The upcoming anime adaptation by Brains Base called D-Frag. Can Brains Base deliver again just like they did with Hotarubi no Mori e and Denpa Teki na Kanojo?
Brains Base has gained quite the recognition over the course of time. They produced Durarara!!, Natsume Yuujinchou and many others. They’ve proven that they can create creative and engaging shows, but also tend to be inconsistent or, as with Mawaru Penguindrum, appeal to a very niche market.
In D-Frag we follow Kazama Kenji who gets caught up with a group of girls who apparently have some outrageous behavior. Kazama, who claims to be a bad ass mofo, is nothing compared to the girl gang he gets caught up with. And that is all we know from the synopsis.
Let’s do a little break down. Taking a look at the staff we have Konishi Katsuyuki who does the voice of Kazama. He voiced Kamina in Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and many other shows. Interestingly enough when running down the list, he did a lot of supporting roles. One of the girls called Chitose, is voiced by Saito Chiwa. She has an impressive track record for doing Aika S. in Aria the Animation, Hitagi in Bakemonogatari and Homura in the Madoka franchise. Chiwa did many impressive and well known characters and she will probably not disappoint this time either. I won’t run down all the characters as there is a pretty wide range of main characters.
D-Frag! is set in the seinen demographic, the humor may be a bit darker or more on the edge or very straightforward perhaps. Plus, because this is not a shounen series, the chance of a heroic main character is rather slim. As the synopsis indicates, the main cast is mostly female, accompanied by the male lead.
D-Frag! will start airing from January 2014. For those who cannot wait, there is an on-going manga version of this series. It’s too early to tell if Brains Base will raise the bar this time.
