Flashforward: Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! 2

chyuu2The second installment of the successful franchise from Kyoto Animation. Will Chuunibyou 2 be a proper installment or a new cash cow?

Chuunibyou tells the story about two high school students who tend to transport themselves in their self created worlds. While the other is trying to get rid of it, he gets pulled back in by a mysterious girl who can’t let go of her delusions.

The first season, on the surface, didn’t seem anything special. It all took place in a familiar setting and the characters looked cutesy as ever. Yet, the series triggered a deeper compassion for its characters. They searched for their own ways to cope with reality. Unknowingly they were part of a larger group, people who faced the same struggles and thought they were alone. They discovered that there were more people like them.

This concept is intriguing as it shows that you are never alone and you have to reach out to somebody for them to open up. In this case being part of a club and interacting with other, fellow students.

Moving away from the series and onto Kyoto Animation, we have a sequel this time. Kyoto Animation proved itself to be a strong sequel maker over the course of time. K-ON! season 2 was better than the previous season and Clannad: After Story left an even bigger impact.

Judging from the preview, that doesn’t reveal much, the familiar look and feel are back. Fans of the previous season will be put in a comfortable setting and probably be in for a steady ride. The story is rather vague at this point, but I believe the weird shenanigans of Rikka, the main girl character, will move on and Yuta will be taken along the way. There will probably be more emphasis on the romance aspect between the two and the growing friendship of the main cast.

Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! 2 will start airing in January 2014, the winter anime season. For those who haven’t seen the first season, they can still pick up the 12 episode long previous season. Fans of KyoAni won’t have to worry as the studio has proven to stay put with its existing formula.

I really enjoyed the first season so I’m very much looking forward to this one. I have a lot of hope for 2014’s anime and it seems Chuunibyou Ren will be my first one so I hope it meets expectations. Admittedly I’m a bit bothered by Nibutani’s new character design, but I’ll just have to see if it grows on me and in the end, that probably won’t matter if the story is as engaging for me as it was before.
